How it started
I discovered quilts as an art form when I was in highschool, and made my first art quilt as my final year art project. My art teacher loved it! I went on to study engineering, but when I became a stay-at-home mum, I knew that I wanted to explore the idea of quilts as art again. After a lot of playing with fabric, paint and dye, I settled on the piecework technique that I now use for all of my quilts. It’s a process that allows me to capture almost any idea or image in fabric form, without resorting to applique. Even better, it’s a methodical process that allows me to work systematically, without having to be ‘in the flow’ or working in the creative chaos that we usually picture in an artist’s studio.
Over the years, so many of you have asked me to teach classes. I was reluctant at first (any fellow introverts here?!), however teaching proved to be such a gift! I learned so much about how to explain my process to others, in a way that is as clear and simple as possible, and leads to good results among my students. I am still not able to keep up with in-person teaching requests, as my priority is being at home for my busy family.
That’s where my course comes in. I teach my quiltmaking process from start to finish, through all-new video lessons. This class is completely self-paced, and all lessons will be available immediately. The processes learned in this class apply to all of my other quilt patterns too.
In class, we work through the Flowering Gum Quilt pattern. When I created my Flowering Gum block-of-the-month in 2021, I had no idea how popular the pattern would be! It has been made by quilters all over the world. What I love about this pattern is that the block format makes it easy to work through a large project step-by-step (perfect for a block-of-the-month). I also love that the design is so eye-catching, while still being a very manageable introduction to my piecework process. In fact, while I still teach my smaller 50cm designs in my two-day workshops, I believe that this pattern is the best introductory pattern to my process.
