Why Should I Do a Block-of-the-Month?
A block-of-the-month (or BOM) quilt project is released in sections, typically one per month, but possibly on some other regular time schedule. A block-of-the-month is a subscription based product (similar to a magazine subscription) where you might be have a recurring monthly subscription cost, or alternatively pay up front. A BOM subscription might be for the pattern and instructions, or might also include the fabric requirements.
BOMs are popular among quiltmakers for a number of reasons:
1. MANAGEABLE
Many people love to take on a block-of-the-month, as it breaks down a potentially daunting project into a number of smaller, more manageable projects. Focussing on one block each month takes pressure away, and leads you step by step to a stunning, fully completed quilt at the end of the project.
2. LEARN NEW THINGS
A BOM can be the perfect opportunity to learn new skills or techniques in a manageable way.
3. INDULGENT
Receiving a new little project by email or snail mail each month sounds like such a lovely way to treat yourself, if you ask me! Life can have us racing from one chore or duty to another, and a monthly little quilt project allows us to stop and do something we love in among the busyness of life.
4. TAKES OUT THE GUESS WORK
When a BOM includes the fabric kit, that really makes things simple for you, and takes out the guesswork of colour selection, allowing you to focus on the creation of your new quilt.
5. COMMUNITY
It can be a lot of fun to follow along with other quiltmakers who are also working on the same BOM. Check out the #floweringgumbom hashtag on instagram to see all the beautiful work on our last BOM.
