Jars of gold
I love early birthday presents! Here’s one from Phil yesterday. (A Fowlers Vacola Preserving Kit – I’ve borrowed my mother-in-law’s before but this one is a little bit easier to use as it doesn’t need to be monitored quite so closely).
Over the last couple of days I actually forfeited my treasured afternoon sewing time to spend it in the kitchen instead. And I’m so excited about the results. Bottled mandarins, and mandarin marmalade. I’ve never been a fan of marmalade, but I love this one. And I’m so happy we could use the mandarins before they turned bad.
For the bottled mandarins, I removed peel, pith and pips, and filled the bottles with a light sugar syrup (I usually prefer water rather than syrup for bottling, but apparently citrus fruits go bitter if you don’t use sugar). I always keep tinned mandarins in the pantry for adding to salad, or topping cheesecake or pavlova, so I’m looking forward to using our own instead.
And then when we checked the mail at the end of the day we found another early birthday present – so very spoilt! Thanks, Viv (I’m assuming it was you) – I’ll be more carefully about the clues I leave online in future. (Oh, and it’s still almost two months till my birthday, so rather amusing to receive two birthday gifts in one day!)
